Today, World Snake Day, we celebrate the important role snakes play in healthy ecosystems while raising awareness about the challenges many species face in the wild. At African Lion Safari, we’re proud to work alongside Reptilia on innovative conservation research to help protect one of Canada’s species at risk—the gray ratsnake (pantherophis spiloides).

The gray ratsnake is one of the largest snake species found in Ontario. Adults typically grow between 1 and 2 metres in length, with some individuals reaching an impressive 2.55 metres, about the height of an NBA player!

Despite their size, gray ratsnakes are non-venomous and play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by helping control rodent populations.

In Ontario, gray ratsnakes are divided into two regional populations:

  • Carolinian population – Listed as endangered under Canada’s Species at Risk Act.
  • Great Lakes/St. Lawrence population – Listed as threatened under the Species at Risk Act.

These populations are assessed separately because they are geographically isolated and face different conservation challenges.

The Carolinian population, found within approximately 100 kilometres of the north shore of Lake Erie, is under significant pressure from habitat loss, road mortality, and other human-related threats. The remaining populations are small, isolated, and vulnerable to disappearing entirely from the region.

Adding to the challenge, gray ratsnakes are slow to reproduce. They typically take 6 to 8 years to reach adulthood, meaning populations recover slowly when numbers decline.

To help safeguard the future of gray ratsnakes, African Lion Safari and Reptilia are collaborating on research focused on assisted reproductive technologies (ART) for reptiles.

Assisted reproductive technologies are methods that help manage fertility and reproduction. While these techniques are commonly used in human medicine and livestock management, they are still in the early stages of development for reptiles.

Our research aims to expand the conservation toolbox available for threatened snake species by developing techniques that could one day support genetically healthy, sustainable populations.

One of our primary research goals is refining biobanking practices.

Biobanking involves preserving valuable genetic material, allowing it to remain viable for future conservation efforts.

Our current focus is determining the most effective methods for cryopreserving sperm cells. Successfully preserving this reproductive material could support future assisted breeding programs, helping conservationists maintain healthy genetic diversity for generations to come.

While this research is still underway, it represents an exciting step forward in developing new tools to help conserve reptiles facing an uncertain future.
