Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) is a common health issue for elephants both in human care and in the wild. African Lion Safari has been instrumental in pursuing the latest EEHV detection and testing protocols. We have joined other elephant care facilities and researchers throughout the world in actively supporting a global, multi-faceted EEHV research effort. As the EEHV infection is the result of complex mechanisms that occur at the viral, cellular, and organism level, unravelling the complexity of EEHV infection will require a novel approach.

Similar approaches have recently been applied to virology and diagnostics for a personalized health care approach in humans. It is our hope that, as in humans, our results will lead to advances that will give veterinarians and elephant care givers more tools and strategies needed to prevent, diagnose and treat EEHV.
