White Rhinoceros
overview
Southern white rhinos are the largest of the rhino species, recognizable by their broad mouths and large bodies. White Rhinoceros is derived from the Afrikaans word “wyd”, meaning “wide”, describing its mouth!
Native to the grasslands and savannahs of southern Africa, they are grazers that feed primarily on grasses, shaping their habitat in the process. These social animals often live in small groups, with females and their calves forming strong bonds. They are also short-sighted with acute senses of smell and hearing.
