Scimitar-Horned Oryx
overview
The scimitar-horned oryx is an antelope once native to the dry plains and deserts of North Africa, easily recognized by its long, curved horns and white coat with light brown markings. These antelopes are adapted to desert life, capable of surviving extreme heat and long periods without water by deriving moisture from the plants they eat. Historically, they traveled in herds, grazing on sparse vegetation, but their populations were driven to extinction in the wild due to overhunting and habitat loss.
